In what seems to be the beginning of an annual January trip to Vancouver to see the Canucks play hockey, we attended a game between the Canucks and the San Jose Sharks. It was a very exciting game with the Canucks scoring early, the Sharks tying each time the Canucks scored, but the Canucks prevailed in the end with a 4-3 victory.
It was a day game, which isn’t normal for the Canucks, so drove up early to have lunch before the game at our favourite (Canadian spelling, eh) noodle place, The Noodle Box. We discovered this restaurant in Victoria, BC and they have another location in Vancouver, but this is a new location in downtown Vancouver near the library.
Here’s the pre-game warmup, with a front and rear shot of our heads. I took the picture of us in our seats, but then you can’t see what we are looking at, so I took one from behind. We sat in the upper deck, goal end, 3rd row.
The Canucks made it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals last year, but they lost to Boston. They also won the Presidents’ Trophy last year, meaning they had the best record in the NHL. We’re going to win it all this year for sure! (I know, spoken like a true Cubs fan)
The Canucks won 4-3 over the San Jose Sharks. So far the Canucks are 1-0-1 when we attend games.
Killing time before dinner, we walked around Gastown, an old neighborhood in downtown Vancouver that is a tourist destination. Here’s the famous steam clock. It is powered by steam, and not as old as you might think. Since this part of town dates from 1870, you’d think this clock is old. But this clock was built in 1977, strictly as a tourist attraction. (It’s also on the cover of the Nickelback album Here and Now. The band is currently based in Vancouver)
Dinner was at Falafel Maison, for some awesome shawarma. Don’t go here for atmosphere. This is a tiny dive, but the flavour (Canadian spelling, eh) is fantastic and the price is great. We both had shawarma sandwiches and cans of soda for under $15.
