Day 2 - May 30, 2008 Last updated: 6/10/08 9:00pm PT
This morning we head into Arches National Park. We spent about 4 hours driving and hiking in Arches. It got a bit warm, mid 80’s. First stop is the aptly named “Balanced Rock”.
Just like the shape of clouds, sometimes you see what you want to see. Here’s “Baseball Glove Rock”, named by me.
There was a 1.6 mile round trip hike to Landscape Arch.
Here’s some scenery from the hike to Landscape Arch.
How often do you see a flower on a cactus?
Wildlife!
Here’s Delicate Arch. It was a half mile hike up hill, in the sun and heat to get closer. This is as close as we got.
Double Arch was probably the one I liked the most. Easy access was a plus, but it was huge and you could climb under it, and enjoy the shade.
Next stop, Canyonlands: The Needles. This was skip-able. You’ve seen these rock formations already. It’s an 80 mile drive one way from Moab. And you still have to drive 120 miles to Cortez, CO.
This is the end of the road.
Petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock. Are they old, left by 12th century gangbangers? Did someone in 1954 add their initials? (yes)
A long day of driving (but not our longest) ends with dinner in Cortez, CO. If you are ever in Cortez, don’t eat at J. Fargo’s. Stomach aches free with every order!
