Day three finds us driving to the Pacific Ocean. We saw two lighthouses. One at Cape Disappointment and the one you see here, North Head Lighthouse, built in 1898. The North Head Lighthouse had better views and better access.
Next we drove to Astoria, Oregon. We went up to the top of Astor Column, which has a spiral mural on its exterior depicting the history of Astoria. Astor Column (125 ft. high) was erected in 1926 to mark the first permanent American Settlement west of the Rockies. The view from the top is of the Columbia river looking into Washington.
A short distance south of Astoria is Fort Clatsop, where Lewis & Clark wintered in 1805-1806 at the end of the journey to find a route to the Pacific. There is a replica of the fort built on the site. Go to the NPS web site to see a picture. The fort was not terribly exciting. The museum portion had some interesting information and artifacts.
