There is a coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain, near LA, called “X” that looked really unique and worth the trip (I’ll describe it later). So a trip idea was born. We’d never been to LA, so we thought we’d also do the Hollywood tourist thing. We pretty much stayed in the Hollywood area for the entire trip, with the exception of Magic Mountain.

Boy, I thought Chicago traffic was bad! It was pretty thick driving from the airport to the hotel, but nothing like after lunch (Fish tacos at Wahoo’s are awesome).

Our first day we went to a TV show taping for the CBS show “Still Standing”. TV tapings are free and I had reserved tickets for two shows in advance. (The second show was on day 3, but we never went to that one.)

After lunch we checked in to the hotel and, after a short rest, headed to the TV show taping. It took 1 hour to go 14 miles. At 2:30 in the afternoon. With no accidents on the highway.

The reason we didn’t go to the second TV show taping was because one is enough. It is interesting to see how it’s done, and I’m glad we went, but there really can’t be much difference between the shows, other than actors and jokes (and sometimes even the jokes are the same). There is a lot of down time for the actors. Every scene is shot at least twice. They have some unknown comedian in the audience who tries to keep you entertained during the down time. I was more interested in seeing the behind the scenes stuff, so I didn’t pay much attention to him. He would bring people up to the front row of the stands to make them look like fools. He would also throw candy at us like we were seals in a zoo. It took about 3 hours to complete the 30 minute sit-com. There was more traffic going back to the hotel, but not as bad

No cameras allowed in the taping, so no pictures today.

Day 2 - Mar 23, 2005
Last updated: 4/10/05 8:00pm PT

Day 2 is Six Flags day. We also kept day 4 open as a backup day in case of bad weather, or other problems. Turns out we needed day 4. The main reason for the trip to LA was to ride the roller coaster called “X”. When we got to the park, we waited in line for about an hour before we found out that “X” wasn’t open yet. There was no estimate on when or if it would open that day. OK, no problem. There are something like 15-16 coasters here, so we started the trek around the park.

One ride puts some serious g-force on your body. Goliath has a huge drop (orange tracks in pictures above, and below), and is a great ride. There is one part of the ride that really made me feel old. I never have had any kind of problems riding roller coasters, but this one turns you in a tight circle, horizontal to the ground. At that point in the ride, it seemed like I was looking out of binoculars whose circular openings were closing. You know the end of the Looney Tunes cartoons when it fades to black and Porky Pig comes out of the shrinking circle? I was waiting for Porky to appear. 15 more seconds of that and I’m sure I would have blacked out. Way cool!!! Ok, not that cool. When we were there 2 days ago, “X” wasn’t running early in the day. It was running later, but the line was huge (somewhere between 2-3 hours). So we decided to come back today and go straight to “X” and wait no matter how long it took. It was the only thing we wanted to do at the park. As luck would have it, the ride was operating right away. We waited less than an hour to get on.

This is the coolest ride I’ve ever ridden. Imagine if you will, a normal roller coaster car riding on the tracks. Now to the left and right, outside the car, attach two reclining chairs to each side. Now, imagine sitting in those chairs, outside the track, with nothing above or below you. Now image what it would be like if those chairs rotated, forward and backward. This is “X”.

You leave the station facing backwards, and climb that first big hill backwards. Normally on a coaster, when you get to the top of the first big hill, you hang there for a bit, admiring the huge drop you are about to travel down. On “X”, you don’t see the drop because you are backwards. The chairs rotate as you move along the track giving you a unique perspective. A couple of times, you are sent down hills with the chairs rotated face down. There is nothing between you and the ground.

Look at the person hanging face down out of the car. This is fun.

We went west on the way back from Six Flags to drive along the Malibu coast.
