This is the deepest river gorge in North America, yes, even deeper than the Grand Canyon! Go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/detail\/wallowa-whitman\/specialplaces\/?cid=stelprdb5239080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and learn something. This was a four day driving extravaganza, putting 1380 miles on the car, and quite a bit of dust too (more on that later). We stopped at a few places along the way, saw an alleged ghost town, some ancient petroglyphs, and Hells Canyon from two sides.<\/p>\n<p>On the way out, we stopped in the small town of Roslyn, WA, not too far from Seattle. You might recognize this scene from the opening of the TV show Northern Exposure. The TV show was filmed here.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-1283 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/Roslyn.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/Roslyn.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>In Oregon, we stopped at the Oregon Trail Blue Mountain Pass Interpretive Site. It is located off I-84 around the Hilgard exit. Look for signs at exit 248. This site has a paved walking path that takes you to a location where you can see ruts in the ground from the wagon trains of the Oregon Trail. Some of the terrain was heavily wooded and there were limited paths through, leading to a &#8220;road&#8221;. Starting in the 1840&#8217;s, people left the main starting point, Independence, Missouri, on a 6 month, 2000 mile journey in covered wagons (this one is a replica). The wagons were not for riding, they were for hauling all your stuff. And by all your stuff, I mean everything; food, clothes, everything you were keeping because you weren&#8217;t going back. You walked unless you were sick and dying. These people were lucky to travel 20 miles in a day. Really good halibut and chips and onion rings. They also have &#8220;finger steak&#8221;. When you see it, you&#8217;ll know why it&#8217;s not called &#8220;steak fingers&#8221; as it really looks like someone&#8217;s fingers were chopped off, breaded and deep fried. They were quite good if you didn&#8217;t look at them. <!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"trip-date\">Day 2 - Sep 4, 2005\r\nLast updated: 10\/15\/05 3:00pm PT<\/pre>\n<p>Night one was in Baker City at the slightly noisy Best Western Sunridge Inn. Today we drove the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. Well, half of it anyway. It&#8217;s a big loop, and we only did the half that goes past Hells Canyon. Then we went north into Washington, then east to Idaho.<\/p>\n<p>Heading east out of Baker City, near the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, is a memorial to the people who lost their lives traveling the Oregon Trail.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-3' class='gallery galleryid-1283 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/OTMemorial.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/OTMemorial.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>First real stop is the Hells Canyon Dam. When you get to the Oregon border, you cross a bridge into Idaho. Then you drive 20 miles north to the dam, which you drive across, back into Oregon, to get to the visitor&#8217;s center. There are many lookouts into Hells Canyon. This one is not only the best that we came across, but is also probably the easiest to get to. I say alleged, because, while there were a lot of old worn out buildings, I&#8217;m not sure all of them were abandoned.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-9' class='gallery galleryid-1283 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/GhostHouse.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/GhostHouse.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>So while researching this trip, I found a website that talked about petroglyphs left by Native Americans many years ago. The Buffalo Eddy petroglyphs are in the southeastern corner of Washington state, about 14 miles south of Clarkston, along the Snake River. I found two descriptions about how to get there, one saying to go a mile past the rocky outcropping and white sand beach. Needless to say there are quite a few rocky outcroppings. We were slowing down every few feet and asking ourselves, &#8220;Is this it?&#8221;. Here&#8217;s the simpler directions: Go to Asotin, WA. Go on County Road 209\/Snake River Rd. until you see the *SIGN* for the Buffalo Eddy Petroglyphs. If I would have know there was a sign&#8230;. The site is very cool. Not much to see here. This day was all about going to the Heaven&#8217;s Gate Lookout, near Riggins, ID. From this lookout, you are suppose to be able to see 4 states (WA, OR, ID, MT). This is suppose to be the best view into Hells Canyon. Elevation 8429 ft. Let me tell you, it&#8217;s not worth the 3.5 to 4 hour drive one way from Lewiston, ID. The last 10 miles are on a one lane, trauma inducing, steep climbing, cliff hugging, gravel road. Then you have to drive back down the mountain! The car was a mess, coated inside and out with dust.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the road is a parking lot. Then you have to hike the last couple hundred vertical feet to the lookout tower you see in the distance in the first picture below. We didn&#8217;t *SEE* the rattlesnake, but we sure heard it. We hiked quickly. Our car is down there, somewhere, in that parking lot, viewed from the lookout.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-11' class='gallery galleryid-1283 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/lookout.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/lookout.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/parking.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/09\/parking.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Unfortunately, there was a forest fire in Hells Canyon, near Heaven&#8217;s Gate Lookout. So any views west are filled with smoke. I&#8217;ve merged three pictures together to give you a look at how the smoke doesn&#8217;t cross the mountain (I say mountain, but I don&#8217;t know the real classification &#8211; we are at 8500 ft). Let me rephrase that, it&#8217;s just an awful smell. There is a paper mill that is just nasty. Today we drove home. There were only two stops planned, the Palouse Falls and the Ginkgo Petrified Forest.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you see weird stuff when you take the backroads.
