They sell new and used books, have 6 locations, one is just technical books. The main store is 4 floors. Powell&#8217;s Books was first opened in 1970 in Chicago by a University of Chicago grad student. His father thought it was a great idea and opened the first Powell&#8217;s in Portland in 1971.<\/p>\n<p>It was VERY sunny when I snapped this picture. I&#8217;m surprised Denise could open her eyes at all! This is in front of the main Powell&#8217;s bookstore after dinner.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-1319 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/09\/dpowells.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/09\/dpowells.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>We stayed at the Marriott City Center hotel. (Pictured is the view from the 15th floor). It was centrally located, clean and mostly quiet (heard the neighbor&#8217;s water running sometimes, hardly a complaint). It took a little over 3 hours to drive there. We parked and took the light rail to the Saturday Market to browse the arts, crafts, jewelry, and food stalls. We could have walked to the market (6 blocks), but it was so HOTTTTT. We rode the train because it was air conditioned. It was 95F in Portland.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery galleryid-1319 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/09\/hotelview.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/09\/hotelview.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Dinner was at Michael&#8217;s Italian Beef. We were looking forward to having a good Italian Beef sandwich, which you can&#8217;t get outside of Chicago. This restaurant is owned by an ex-Chicagoan, so we had high hopes. Unfortunately, the sandwich was not good. The beef was sliced too thick and the juice had no flavor. This was no better than a French Dip at Arby&#8217;s, but at least Arby&#8217;s slices the beef thinner. <!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"trip-date\">Day 2 - Sep 3, 2006\r\nLast updated: 9\/13\/06 1:30pm PT<\/pre>\n<p>On Sunday, we drove to the <a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstateparks.org\/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&amp;parkId=151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silver Falls State Park<\/a>. It is about 25 miles east of Salem, which is about 45 miles south of Portland. Near the north side of Salem, you pass a sign that says you&#8217;ve crossed the 45th parallel. In theory, this is halfway between the north pole and the equator. In reality, since the Earth bulges in the middle, the real halfway point is a little bit north. Not sure if the sign is adjusted for this.<\/p>\n<p>At the park, we hiked most of the Trail of Ten Falls. It&#8217;s a loop trail that is 8.7 miles long, taking you past ten waterfalls. We only hiked about 6 miles, skipping the last two waterfalls, as they were far from all the others and we could drive past, and see at least one of them from the road.<\/p>\n<p>First up was the South Falls. It&#8217;s 177 feet tall and you can walk behind it. In the first picture, you can see people on the trail on the left side of the picture, about half way up. This is the fall to see if you don&#8217;t feel like hiking. It&#8217;s near the parking lot. The rest of the trail does have some decent hills to climb. I wouldn&#8217;t call it a difficult hike, but it ain&#8217;t easy either. These are probably much bigger in spring and early summer during the snow melt. We walked along the Willamette River. Ate burgers at the Thirsty Lion, mostly because it was open. Most places were closed as this was Labor Day. Had an interesting appetizer; scotch eggs. A hard boiled egg, wrapped in sausage meat, breaded and deep fried, served with some kind of dipping sauce. Pretty good.<\/p>\n<p>Went to the history museum and art museum. The history museum had an American President exhibit, which was stuff from the Smithsonian (which we saw when we were in DC). They also had some history of Oregon exhibits which were interesting. They had a pair of sagebrush sandals on display that were carbon dated to over 9000 years old. The art museum was a waste of time. It was mostly modern and stuff a 3 year old could do. I&#8217;m not saying splashing a canvas with a bucket of paint isn&#8217;t art, I&#8217;m just saying it shouldn&#8217;t be in a museum if I can do it.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner at Jake&#8217;s Famous Crawfish, which opened in 1892. I had the etoufee and Denise had the Coquille St. John. It was very good. Denise rated this place as one of the best places we&#8217;ve eaten at while on any vacation.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"trip-date\">Day 4 - Sep 5, 2006\r\nLast updated: 9\/11\/06 5:30pm PT<\/pre>\n<p>On our last day, we drove about 30 miles east of Portland to the Multnomah Falls. This is a must see if you&#8217;re in the area. Pork schnitzel on a bun with lettuce, onion, paprika spread and horseradish.
