The ultimate goal of this trip was Mesa Verde in Colorado. Since it isn’t near anything resembling a major airport, we had to choose where to land and start the trip. Salt Lake City seemed like a good choice because there are quite a few national parks/monuments/recreation-whatevers along the way. Our vacations are not for resting. We visited Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Natural Bridges National Monument, Capitol Reef National Park, and drove thru Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. I thought about extending the vacation to hit a few others, but really, how many rocks and canyons can a person take in one trip?

The trip started an hour late, thanks to “mechanical problems” on the plane. Once we were pulling away from the gate, the pilot came on the intercom and said the delay was because they had to get a new plane. He said this plane should be fine, there’s one gauge not working, but it has a backup. There’s a time for sharing information and there’s a time for keeping quiet. This was the quiet time. We flew Southwest. They’ve changed their boarding procedure mess. Before, you were in group A, B or C. Then when your group was called, the pushing and shoving began. Now they number you, A 45, A 46, … and you line up in order. Much better. Make sure to print out your boarding pass online the night before. The earlier you check in online, the better number you get, which means the better seat you get. We booked this trip before oil hit $100 a barrel. I’m not looking forward to the price of the next plane ride.

We landed in SLC around 1pm (I’m going to abbreviate Salt Lake City, because it’s just too long and you’re smart enough to know what SLC means), so first things first, lunch. Siegfried’s Deli in downtown SLC for some awesome wiener schnitzel. Their German potato salad wasn’t anything special, but the schnitzel was great, and cheap too. $6.99 for schnitzel and two side dishes. There’s a parking garage to the west of the deli, and parking is free since the deli validates.

About 4 hours later, we’re in Moab, UT. Dinner was at Miguel’s Baja Grill, home to the Mother Of All Burritos. Ha! They’ve never been to Gordito’s in Seattle. This “MOAB” burrito was half the size or less, had yellow rice and refried beans, and was way over priced. And the salsa tasted like pizza sauce. Of course, you are in the middle of nowhere, so pay up, shut up and eat.

For the first stop with pictures, we went for a drive into Canyonlands. There are 3 parts to Canyonlands; Island in the Sky, the Needles, and the Maze. The Maze is only accessible by 4 wheel drive or foot (we had neither, ok maybe we have feet, but we chose not to use them here). First up, Island in the Sky.

Risking life and limb for the perfect photo!

Getting older, but still a good looking couple.

That is a human out there on that ledge.

Day 2 - May 30, 2008
Last updated: 6/10/08 9:00pm PT

This morning we head into Arches National Park. Stomach aches free with every order!

Day 3 - May 31, 2008
Last updated: 6/12/08 8:00pm PT

Got up early to get into Mesa Verde. Cortez is the closest town, so we spent last night there. Tonight we will stay in the park. The Mesa Verde Visitor’s Center is about 45 minutes from Cortez.

Mesa Verde is the reason for this trip; to see the cliff dwellings of the Anasazi. Seeing the cliff dwellings from afar wasn’t enough, we wanted to get inside one or two of them. There is limited access to some of the cliff dwellings. I should say, most dwellings you can’t even get to at all. To help protect the ones you can get to, you can only go on a park ranger led tour. You buy $3 tickets, which are only available one day in advance, in person, and they sell out quick in peak season. Not wanting to risk missing a tour of at least one of the dwellings, we found a way around the 1 day pre-purchase limitation. You can book a 4 hour ranger led bus tour in advance (like in February) on visitmesaverde.com. (Watch your credit card statement though, I just found out today that they billed us twice for this tour, once in February and once on the day of the tour. The person I spoke with at Mesa Verde said, “Yeah, that happens”). This guaranteed us access to at least one cliff dwelling, the Cliff Palace. Once we got to the park, we got $3 tickets to see the Long House for tomorrow. There is a rebuilt dwelling called the Spruce Tree House, that is easily accessible, and no tickets are required. Cliff Palace is partially rebuilt. The Long House is the least rebuilt of the ones you can visit.

Depending on how you pronounce it and where you look it up, ‘Anasazi’ means ‘ancient foreigners’, ‘ancient people’ or ‘ancient enemy’, so all the park signs have been changed to say “Ancestral Puebloans”. There are about 20 Native American tribes that claim to be descendants of the Anasazi. No one really knows for sure what happened. People have lived in this area for thousands of years. The Anasazi lived on top of Mesa Verde (which is actually a cuesta, not a mesa, which means it’s a slope). They farmed, they had houses. At some point, maybe due to drought and/or over population, they built and moved into the cliff dwellings, possibly freeing up more land for farming. The cliff dwellings were cooler (as in temperature, not “look how cool my cliff house is”) and places to get water. The cliff dwellings are at the bottom of the sandstone layer of rock, and water seeps through the sandstone. Somewhere in the 1200-1300’s the people moved away. There is no evidence of violence or cannibalism, at least none at Mesa Verde. No one will ever know for sure what the real story is. I’m starting to read a book called ‘Anasazi America’ by David E. Stuart, which was recommended by multiple park rangers. Maybe I’ll learn some more.

When I bought the tickets in February, the website said to meet the bus at the Far View Terrace. So we got there with plenty of time to spare. Not a soul to be seen. This seemed wrong. Denise went into the building and asked someone about the tour. He said go to the Visitor’s Center. Off we go. The Visitor’s Center sells the $3 tickets and isn’t open. Time’s running out for the 8am tour. I find a park ranger, I think I scared her, I walk quiet sometimes. She said our tour meets at the Far View Lodge. Off to the Lodge. There’s the bus. 7:59. Phew, I don’t like cutting it that close, especially since we were at the first place at 7:40. We got on the bus and it left the Lodge. First stop? Far View Terrace to pick up any people there! So we could have stayed there and been OK, but we got some bad information from a park employee and ran around like idiots so we didn’t miss the tour.

The bus tour stops at a few places before going to the Cliff Palace. We had an excellent park ranger. You don’t have much choice, but you want one of the old-timers for your park ranger. They know a lot more and the one we had today actually has met with the tribe elders to get some of the oral histories told to him.

A wild turkey. It eventually just laid down in the road.

Square Tower House

Here’s a Kiva with the roof removed.

Most sites are inaccessible

Cliff Palace, from across the canyon.

Getting into Cliff Palace requires climbing down the uneven stairs carved into the cliff. It’s an easy walk to this site and it requires no additional admission fee. There’s a bit of a hill on the way out, but no stairs. The cool thing about this site is that they’ve rebuilt a kiva and they let you climb down the ladder to see what the inside is like. It’s quite spacious. I was able to stand up with plenty of headroom.

The closest hole in the ground is the ventilation shaft. The farther hole is the entrance to the kiva (with the ladder sticking out). This opening is also the exhaust hole because the firepit is directly below the ladder. Some interesting things to see, but I heard there used to be a mummified body on display. That’s not there anymore. We stayed at the Far View Lodge. It’s pretty old, but clean. The rooms are in multiple 1 story buildings, think small town motel. Each narrow room had a front door and a back door. Out back is a small deck. If the building was taller than one story, it would be a balcony instead of a deck. No TV, no AC. We didn’t need either. Although hot during the day, the elevation is somewhere around 7-8000 feet above sea level, so it cools dramatically at night. There’s WiFi in the lobby, and when the wind blew the right way, I was able to connect from our deck for a few minutes. There’s only one restaurant open for dinner, so bring your favorite credit card. I don’t remember much about the flavor of dinner, but desert was an incredibly thick and rich chocolate gnoche cake. Worth every penny.

While on the deck, we saw a deer strolling by. This is on the other side of the park, and they suggest it takes 45 minutes to drive there from the Lodge. The road is closed until 9am, so you can’t get an early start. This kind of set back our plan for the day a bit, but not too bad. Once you get to the other side of the park, you get on a tram which drives you around to all the sites.

I liked the Long House tour a little better than the Cliff Palace, mostly because you get to go in the back of the dwelling. It was very hot, even at 10am. Once you got into the back of the cliff, it was very pleasant. As with the Cliff House tour, we had an older ranger.

These are hard to see, but they are actual hand and foot holes used by the Anasazi to climb down the cliff face. (The bigger depressions). I’m standing about 3 feet in front of them.

<div My feet are big enough to cover 4 states.

There is nothing out here. Large, clean, comfortable, air conditioned rooms.

Day 5 - Jun 2, 2008
Last updated: 6/12/08 9:00pm PT

Today we spent about 10 hours in the car. Starting in Bluff, ending in SLC. Tomorrow is the flight home.

We stopped at Natural Bridges National Monument. Not much to see here unless you go hiking, and we had too long of a day ahead of us to hike. ‘Natural bridges’ are formed when a stream or river cuts through the bottom of stone, creating the arch. ‘Natural arches’ are created when water seeps down from the top, weakening the stone below, causing it to fall, forming the arch.

We passed through Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, crossing the Colorado River. We stopped when we crossed the bridge over the Colorado River because there was a guy about to jump. He had on a parachute, and his friend were helping him strap in, and a few people were below the bridge on the side of the river watching and running a video camera. I’d have taken a picture, but the guy chickened out.

While we were at this lookout, up comes a guy pedaling a recumbent bike. We are still in the middle of nowhere. I asked him where he came from and he said “Spokane”, as in Washington state. We’re still pretty far south in Utah. And we are over 7000 feet above sea level, and it’s extremely hilly. He’s been going for about a month and had another month to go before he reached his destination of Kansas City. He looked to be in his late 50’s or early 60’s, and was rail thin. He camps out most of the time, but spends some nights in hotels. I’m always fascinated by these kind of adventures. I enjoy reading books about people who hike, bike or something else over great distances. Maybe someday… Nah!

Next stop, Capitol Reef National Park. Here’s Capitol Dome, named because it is supposed to look like the capitol building in DC. Years ago, there were 2 Connie’s restaurants in SLC. I never figured out how that happened, but they were actually on the Connie’s website. I Google’d Connie’s SLC and got the phone number to one of the places. They are no longer called Connie’s, now it’s La Pizzeria, but they claimed the recipes were the same. I’m always up for pizza, so we had dinner there. This was the best pizza I’ve had outside of Chicago. The crust was not exactly the same, a little thick, but the flavor was there.

After dinner we decided that we can’t be in SLC and not at least see the Great Salt Lake.

Regarding the flight home, Denise had bought some sunscreen. A small 4 oz container. It was smaller than my deodorant. The limit you can take on the plane in a carry-on is 3 oz. We tried to bring it home, we put it in our plastic zip lock baggy, face down so you couldn’t read the size. Sure enough, they picked it out and made us dispose of it. I can bring pointy metal scissors with 4 inch blades, but not a 4 oz. container of sunscreen. Yeah, I feel safer.

Utah

Day 1 – May 29, 2008 Last updated: 6/9/08 9:00pm PT 5 nights, 4 states, 1 country, 1333 miles, 1 million dollars.
