We stayed in West Yellowstone, Montana, a town that contains nothing but hotels, restaurants and gas stations. We decided to drive because there really isn’t a close place to land if flying. And the rental car rates were more than the airfare. We put a little over 2000 miles on our car.

On the way to Yellowstone, we decided to stop and see the Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho. Our first day was about 9 hours on the road, stopping in Yakima, WA for lunch, and Boise, ID for dinner and a place to sleep. The next morning we set out for Craters of the Moon.

Most of the lava fields at Craters of the Moon came from eruptions dating from 15,000 to 2,000 years ago. The interesting thing I learned at the visitor’s center was that the hot spot that is currently under Yellowstone, was under Craters of the Moon 10 to 6 million years ago. The crust of the Earth is shifting so that the hot spot appears to be moving north and east, so don’t buy any property north and east of Yellowstone in the next million years.

A spatter cone, from outside and inside

It was very windy

There are some lava tubes that you can explore, but only one is accessible without a flashlight. We arrived at the Grand Tetons as the sun was setting. This meant driving in the dark through Yellowstone to get to our hotel. National parks do not have street lights. Yellowstone is at an average elevation of 8,000 feet (2,400 meters). It was hard to tell exactly when the rain turned into snow, but at one point there were some big flakes coming down. That was about the time I almost hit the deer. I was going slow and the deer was mostly on the side of the road, so no one was really in danger, but it sure gave us a scare.

In the morning, it was 26F (-3C). It’s a 12 hour drive home, and we thought that was a bit long for one day, so we figured we would drive until dinner time, then stay at a hotel and finish the drive in the morning. We left West Yellowstone around 8am and drove north to I-90 before heading west. I figured we would stop for the day in Idaho. But when we got there, it was way too early to stop, so we kept going. Then we drove a few more hours, but it was still too early, so we kept going. We stopped in Ellensburg, WA for dinner, but at that point, we were too close to home to justify a hotel room, so we kept going. Unfortunately, we got stuck in traffic. I-90 was closed for about an hour at Snoqualmie Pass in the Cascade Mountains. They were doing rock blasting on the side of the road (Sometimes car sized boulders break off the mountain and crush cars. It’s rare, but it happens). Ultimately we made it home in one day.

Craters of the Moon and Yellowstone

Day 1 & 2 – Sep 4 & 5, 2010 Last updated: 9/16/10 9:00am PT This year we went to Yellowstone National Park, located mostly in Wyoming, but it overflows into Montana.
