This was a driving trip. We put on about 2500 miles. There were a couple of long driving days where we got saddle sore. We should have added a few more stops to break up the long driving stretches.

In California there are a bunch of national parks that are (relatively) close together. But, they are in the middle of nowhere, and California is quite large. When planning this trip, we were looking at the map and just kept saying “we’re already that far, might as well keep going”. Eventually, we ran out of time and had to turn back.

We criss-crossed the mountains many times, changing elevations a lot, up and down and up and down, from 5000 ft. to 7000 to 6000 to 8000 to 5000 to…. The Yosemite park east entrance is at 9945 ft.

On the maps page, you can see the route we took. Driving south from Seattle, we took the back roads out of Portland, OR towards Bend, OR, with day 1’s final destination of Klamath Falls, OR.

Outside of Portland is Mount Hood.

Just south of Bend is Newberry National Volcanic Monument. We did not explore the whole park. There are 3 main parts to this park. Lava Lands (adjacent to route 97), the Lava Cast Forest (after 9 miles of unpaved road), and Paulina Lake (12.5 miles off rt. 97). We just stopped at the Lava Lands visitor center to see old lava flows. There are some easy, paved trails here.

A dead twisted tree. We had a half slab of baby back ribs and a half slab of St. Louis style spare ribs. It was half good and the stomach was half churning afterwards.

At the hotel, we could not get into our room after check-in. You know that little bar that flips over the peg on the door for security when you are inside the room? That was caught on the door, even though no one was in the room, so we couldn’t open the door. The woman at the front desk came up to the room with a piece of plastic, opens the door a little and inserts the plastic where the bar is, closes the door, reopens the door and presto, we are in the room. So next time you are in your hotel room and have that bar enabled and you feel all safe, keep in mind that you’re not really safe. All it takes is a piece of plastic (and the key of course).

Sep 2, 2012
Last updated: 9/8/12 2:00pm PT

Day 2 started with a short drive over the Oregon/California border to Tulelake and Newell. The Tule Lake Segregation Center was the largest of the Japanese relocation/concentration camps in the US during World War II. This was made a national monument in 2008. I expected there to be some remnants of the camp. There is nothing here. There are some new buildings and people live here, but we did not see anything left from the old WWII camp. In the town of Tulelake, there are artifacts at the museum, which unfortunately was closed when we arrived.

Below are pictures of items outside the museum. Why did we stop in Nevada? It was on the way to Bodie, CA, an old mining ghost town, maintained in a state of ‘arrested decay’.

This was a highlight of the trip. Most ghost towns we see are usually one or two buildings, or aren’t really ‘ghost’, as people are currently living in them. Getting here was a challenge as the last 3 miles are unpaved, bumpy and dusty. And the elevation is over 8000 feet above sea level.

Only about 5% of the buildings remain from the 1880’s when the town thrived with a population of about 10,000 people. Gold was discovered here in 1859, and a mill operated here until 1938 (although I also saw a reference to 1941). This was one of the first places in the world to use a hydroelectric plant to generate power, in 1892. Of course the town burned down a couple of times, in 1892 and 1932, and the mill burned in 1898. Winters are brutal here with snow 20 feet deep and temperatures to -30F.

If you ever go here, drop the extra $2 for the booklet. It’s very informative.

When you click the picture to open this window, click the image to expand it to its full size, then scroll around to see it all.

Some buildings are better maintained than others.

Most buildings you cannot enter. There was no place to pull out afterwards, and I didn’t see it soon enough, so there is no picture.

When you click the picture to open this window, click the image to expand it to its full size, then scroll around to see it all.

Yosemite

A co-worker of mine recommended hiking to the top of Sentinel Dome (8122 ft). We drove for about 11 hours, from Fresno, CA to Springfield, OR. The speed limit was 70 through most of California, 65 through Oregon. We only stopped for lunch (Carl’s Jr.) and gas. In Springfield/Eugene, we had dinner at Hop Valley Brewing, only because we were hungry and it was walking distance from the hotel. We had stayed here before and eaten in this same building in 2007, but back then it was a German restaurant. We also went for ice cream (again) at Prince Pücklers.

Day 6 was more driving, from Springfield, OR to home, with a stop in Portland to visit Powell’s bookstore and have lunch. Both were disappointing. Powell’s doesn’t seem to have the bargains it once had. Lunch was at Big-Ass Sandwiches, which we saw on the Food Network. It was OK, but not worth the wait in line.

We bought the Ford Fiesta at the end of 2011 because Denise’s 12 year old Oldsmobile became unreliable. The Fiesta is great. It rides like a bigger car (unless you are trying to pass someone while going up the mountain). We did almost 2500 miles and averaged 42.84 miles per gallon over the whole trip (no need for a hybrid here). The best mileage we got was 47.32 and the worst we got was 40.09. We hit 47 twice, 40 twice and had a few 42-44 fill-ups. I was getting so spoiled by fill-ups over 40 mpg that when we ‘only’ got 40, I was disappointed. This great mileage was achieved even with a lot of mountain driving and running the A/C pretty much the whole time.

Here is the car, with lots of dead bugs stuck to the front.

Sep 1, 2012 Last updated: 9/8/12 2:00pm PT This year’s trip was to Northeast California to visit a few national parks.
