We thought Montreal and Quebec might be different, since they speak French and we don&#8217;t, and would be cheaper than going to France. Since there are no non-stop flights from Seattle to either location, and we couldn&#8217;t be bothered with a layover somewhere in between \ud83d\ude42 we decided to fly to Boston and drive 2000+ miles from Boston to Boston, the long way, zig-zag-ing around New England and New France. (actual driving mileage was about 2250 miles). Look at the Maps page for a rough outline of our path.<\/p>\n<p>We visited 6 states and 2 provinces. It sounds like a lot, but most of the states are really small. Because Rhode Island is so small, I think we&#8217;ve actually been to 90% of that state&#8217;s land area.<\/p>\n<p>We knew we were missing the &#8216;fall color&#8217; season, but we also would miss the fall crowds and prices.<\/p>\n<p>The last time we went to Boston, in 2001, we lived in Chicago and the flight time was about 2 hours. From Seattle it is around 6 hours. So we left Seattle at 8:30 in the morning and arrived in Boston after 5pm with the three hour timezone change. We took the subway from the airport to our hotel in the city (John Jeffries House &#8211; a small hotel with clean and quiet rooms, but most important a reasonable price in downtown Boston). We are renting a car, but not picking it up until tomorrow. No point in paying an extra day (plus parking) when we weren&#8217;t leaving Boston until morning.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner was at Jacob Wirth, a German restaurant we liked last time. This time we weren&#8217;t as impressed. Maybe because it didn&#8217;t live up to the (now closed) German restaurant we loved in Seattle call &#8216;Bratz&#8217;.<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"trip-date\">Day 2 - Aug 31, 2014\r\nLast updated: 9\/14\/14 10:00am PT<\/pre>\n<p>In the morning we took the subway back to the airport to pick up the rental car. Usually non-airport car rentals are cheaper, but not this time.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/boston-waitingfortrain.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/boston-waitingfortrain.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The Minute Man National Historical Park runs between Lexington and Concord, west of Boston. This park follows the trail of Paul Revere&#8217;s &#8216;midnight ride&#8217;. Not sure how Revere got so famous, he didn&#8217;t even finish the &#8216;ride&#8217;. Here we see the spot where he got captured by the British. Someone else, Samuel Prescott, finished the ride to Concord.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/revere-capture.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/revere-capture.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>In Concord, the North Bridge is the place where the first shot was fired in the Revolutionary War.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-3' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/northbridge1.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/northbridge1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/northbridge2.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/northbridge2.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>We drove past Walden Pond, as it is very close to Concord, but the parking lots were closed (full) and there wasn&#8217;t even room on the side of the road to stop and take a picture (It was Labor Day weekend, and I guess a lot of locals spend time there). Denise took a picture as we drove by. Below are pictures at the Bennington Battle Monument. This is Vermont&#8217;s tallest structure at 306 feet. This monument commemorates the battle fought here in 1777. It was built between 1887 and 1891. We took the elevator to the viewing area (the row of 5 larger windows near the top).<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-6' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bbm1.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bbm1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bbm2.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bbm2.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>We also visited a place where they make pottery, but being a Sunday, no potters where making anything.<\/p>\n<p>Had some excellent burgers at Kevin&#8217;s Sports Pub in North Bennington.<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"trip-date\">Day 3 - Sep 1, 2014\r\nLast updated: 9\/14\/14 4:00pm PT<\/pre>\n<p>This morning we left Bennington, VT with a final destination of Burlington, VT. We could have driven due north and been there in under 3 hours, but what fun would that be? Instead we drove east, then north, then east some more, into New Hampshire, before heading west to Burlington.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of historic covered bridges in Vermont. Not sure why bridges were covered in the first place and I didn&#8217;t bother to research them. We didn&#8217;t go out of our way to see any, but did see a few. One was in Townshend, VT. The Scott Covered Bridge, the longest in the state at 277 feet was built in 1870. The concrete pier under the middle of the bridge was built in 1981 to add support. There is a fence preventing anyone from entering the bridge.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-7' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/scott1.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/scott1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/scott2.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/scott2.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Quechee Gorge, 165 deep and not very exciting.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-8' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/quechee.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/quechee.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park, NH was much better. You walk up the gorge. In the winter, some of the wooden walkways are removed because the snow and frozen water would destroy them. The walls rise 70-90 feet and the width varies from 12-20 feet.<br \/>\nOn the way out of Franconia Notch, we stopped to see what was left of the &#8216;Old Man of the Mountain&#8217;, a rock formation on the side of a cliff that collapsed in 2003. Again we could have driven straight north and been there in under 2 hours. Instead we drove east to cross the border in Derby, VT.<\/p>\n<p>We originally planned on stopping at the Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s factory in Waterbury, VT last night, but we were finishing up a long day so we pushed it off until this morning. No pictures are allowed on the factory tour, and we saw why. There was a total Lucille Ball moment, when the ice cream cartons got jammed up in the machine and about 5 employees rushed over trying to fix the blockage while ice cream cartons were spilling onto the floor. The $4 tour includes a &#8216;free&#8217; ice cream sample, which wasn&#8217;t enough to satisfy the craving, so we bought some ice cream from their store and had ice cream for breakfast. Shh, don&#8217;t tell my mom.<\/p>\n<p>After the factory tour, we visited the flavor graveyard to pay our respects to the flavors no longer made.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-11' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bj1.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bj1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bj2.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bj2.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Smuggler&#8217;s Notch, 1000 foot cliffs through the Green Mountains, north of Stowe, VT. Back in the early 1800&#8217;s there was an embargo on trade with Canada. Smugglers used this pass to continue trade illegally. It continued to be used by fugitive slaves and also during prohibition. There were giant boulders along side the road.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-12' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/smuggler1.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/smuggler1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/smuggler2.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/smuggler2.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Derby Line, VT is a town on the border with Canada. The Haskell Free Library and Opera House is built deliberately on top of the border. We went into the library and it looked like a library. All the books seemed to be on the Canadian side of the building.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-13' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/border2.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/border2.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/border3.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/border3.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The street that crosses the border is protected by these hardy flower pots. All road signs are in French. Canada is bilingual, but Quebec is &#8216;French first&#8217;, which means they forget about English. We finished the day in Montreal. We walked around the area known as &#8216;Old Montreal&#8217; a bit. We stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel, which was very nice. <!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"trip-date\">Day 5 - Sep 3, 2014\r\nLast updated: 9\/17\/14 8:00pm PT<\/pre>\n<p>This morning we went to the Pointe-\u00e0-Calli\u00e8re museum, an archaeological museum built on top of old ruins from the time of the earliest settlers in Montreal. I think more interesting than some of the ruins was the temporary exhibit on Marco Polo.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch at Noobox (a noodle restaurant), we went on a tour of the Centre Bell, home of the Montreal Canadiens. It takes 7 days to prepare the ice for hockey. A 1 day pass is only $10, which becomes beneficial when you ride more than three times. We rode the subway to do laundry (we needed to use real machines and there wasn&#8217;t a laundromat near the hotel). The Biosphere was the pavilion of the United States, a geodesic dome that had acrylic tiles, but those melted in a fire in the &#8217;70s. A city so nice they named it twice &#8211; oh wait, that&#8217;s New York. A little outside of downtown Quebec City is Montmorency Falls. These falls are &#8216;higher than Niagara Falls&#8217;, but if they were more spectacular than Niagara, then Niagara would be saying &#8216;wider than Montmorency&#8217;. We drove &#8216;around&#8217; Maine. We only drove on a small portion of Maine soil today. There is only one bridge to Campobello Island, so unless you take a ferry, you have to drive through Maine.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped in Rivi\u00e8re-du-Loup, Quebec on the St. Lawrence River. Whales are supposed to come in this far, but there wasn&#8217;t a good place to stop for a view. Not that we would have been able to see anything anyway. We did, last week, stumble past the world&#8217;s tallest ladder back chair while in Bennington, VT, but I assure you it was by accident. <!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"trip-date\">Day 10 - Sep 8, 2014\r\nLast updated: 9\/20\/14 5:00pm PT<\/pre>\n<p>Campobello Island was a summer retreat for the wealthy and important people of the Gilded Age. In 1881, a group of businessmen bought most of the island and built three luxury hotels to lure and sell land to wealthy Americans for summer homes. Back then you had to take a steamship from Bar Harbor, ME to get here.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin D. Roosevelt first came to the island with his parents, as a one year old in 1883. He spent his summers on the island as a child and young man, but only a few times after he became president.<\/p>\n<p>This is the FDR Cottage (it is very large), which was purchased in 1909 by FDR. We stayed at the Whale Watch Motel, which had friendly and knowledgeable hosts. We weren&#8217;t staying very long, but we did try to see whales that were in the area recently. We previously had lobster rolls in San Francisco, and they were served with warm lobster coated in butter and were very good. On the east coast, lobster rolls are cold lobster mixed with mayo on a toasted bun. In the morning we drove to Portland, ME. I assumed by the name that this was his house, but it was a boarding house where he stayed only twice. The house is now a Portsmouth history museum and had a lot of interesting information. A large exhibit was on the Treaty of Portsmouth from 1905 to end the Russo-Japanese war, and that was very interesting. There was also information about John Paul Jones, and basically he was a pirate.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-36' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/jpjhouse.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/jpjhouse.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>We spent the night in Durham, NH, just outside of Portsmouth.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"trip-date\">Day 12 - Sep 10, 2014\r\nLast updated: 9\/21\/14 5:00pm PT<\/pre>\n<p>We are still in Portsmouth, NH in the morning, and we visited the Strawberry Banke Museum, an entire neighborhood of buildings preserved where they originally stood (only 4 houses were moved from elsewhere, 32 are on their original sites). The oldest house was built in 1695 (the dark brown one below). The rest are from the 18th and 19th centuries. Obviously, they are restored, although some looked more restored than others. Each building that was open to the public had either a docent, who would explain the history of the building and point out interesting features, or a character actor pretending to be living in the era of the house &#8211; which I find creepy.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-37' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/strawberrybanke.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/strawberrybanke.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>After leaving Portsmouth, we drove down the coast and stopped in Hampton Beach, NH. This is a boardwalk\/summer resort type of town. The season was over for the year, the town was dead, so we just stopped long enough to take a picture.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-38' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/hamptonbeach.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/hamptonbeach.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Next stop was Salem, MA, home of the famous witch trials. We did not go to any of the witch museums. We went to the Salem History Museum, located in the old Town Hall building (from 1817). This had more than just the history of the witch trials and wasn&#8217;t sensationalized.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-39' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/salem.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/salem.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Last stop for the day was in Newport, RI. We had attempted to visit here in 2001 and failed, but now we have succeeded. There are very large (and I mean VERY LARGE) mansions on the coast. The largest were built in the late 1800&#8217;s and early 1900&#8217;s. The most famous is probably The Breakers, built in 1895 and is a 70 room summer estate of the Vanderbilts. Here we are standing in front of The Breakers. The drive to East Haddam was nice, on winding tree-lined roads. The leaves are still not changing.<\/p>\n<p>The Gillette Castle was built in 1914 by actor William Gillette (famous for playing Sherlock Holmes). During the &#8217;60s while excavating for a new state building, a large area of fossilized dinosaur tracks were uncovered. So they built a museum around the tracks. These tracks are over 200 million years old.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-45' class='gallery galleryid-2513 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/dinosaur.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/hovorka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/dinosaur.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The last stop of this vacation is Boston, where we started almost 2 weeks ago. We dropped off the car at the airport rental location and walked to the Embassy Suites, where we stayed for free (We finally had accumulated enough hotel reward points to get a free hotel stay &#8211; and hotel prices in Boston are really high, so spending points in Boston was an optimal way to use them). We stayed near the airport because we have a very early flight home tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n<p>We took the subway into downtown Boston and randomly stepped into a bar that served boiled lobster.
