(Didn&#8217;t I write that last year too?) This year, 1640 miles, but only 3 states (NV, AZ, UT). We flew into Las Vegas (took in a show), drove past the Hoover Dam, spent four nights in Flagstaff and visited many sites including the Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon, drove north into Utah for Bryce and Zion National Parks before heading back to Vegas for the return flight.<\/p>\n<p>After landing in Las Vegas, we went to the half-price ticket resellers to buy tickets to Cirque du Soleil Myst\u00e8re (pronounced myst-air). The show was a combination of gymnastics and ballet on steroids. It could have had less filler, but when the acrobats were doing their thing, it was pretty good.<\/p>\n<p>Lunch was at Harrah&#8217;s buffet. Flagstaff weather was much better than Vegas. Temperatures in the 70s instead of the 100s. Dinner was at Freddy&#8217;s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers.<\/p>\n<p>On the way to Flagstaff, we stopped at the Hoover Dam. In the old days, the road on top of the dam was the way you left NV and entered AZ. Now there is a big bridge (with a view of the dam) to speed you on your way. This is where the planet Pluto was discovered. Lowell didn&#8217;t discover Pluto, he searched for it from here, and it was Clyde Tombaugh who finished Lowell&#8217;s work and discovered Pluto. The story they tell is that Pluto was named after a Greek god, and that Disney renamed his cartoon dog after the planet.<\/p>\n<p>During the day they had set up a telescope pointing at the Sun (with a filter) so we were able to see Sun spots.<\/p>\n<p>We went back at night when they had multiple telescopes set up for public viewing. One was pointing at a binary star system. I saw two dots close together, and I trust that the observatory staff was not deceiving me. Another telescope was pointed at Saturn, and there was no question about that. It was extremely windy at the Petrified Forest.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner was at Salsa Brava. We had a stuffed sopapilla and a Navajo taco, both served on fry bread. This fry bread lacked flavor. We will have much better fry bread in a few days.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a piece of meteorite, believed to have been part of the meteor that crashed here about 50,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-5' Walnut Canyon National Monuments.<\/p>\n<p>Wupatki was occupied until around the 1200&#8217;s. Felt like air conditioning. Nature carved out the cliff overhangs and people built walls to make rooms for living and storage. Walnut canyon was pretty cool. Not Mesa Verde cool, but still a nice site. The Grand Canyon was the &#8216;must see&#8217; item on our list and the reason we went on this trip, but turned out not to be as impressive as some of the other sites we saw. Maybe our expectations were too high. Maybe, because the canyon is so huge, it&#8217;s impossible to get some sense of how big it actually is when you are standing on its edge.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived early and took the shuttle bus inside the park to various lookout points to the west of the visitor&#8217;s center. We walked between a few of the lookouts. Then we drove east, stopping at more lookout points before heading back to Flagstaff.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner was at Diablo Burger. We did not know how long it would take to see the Grand Canyon. We knew we weren&#8217;t hiking down to the bottom. We figured if we needed more time, we would revisit the canyon today. Instead, we relaxed in the morning a little, then drove to Page, AZ. Along the way, we stopped at the Cameron Trading Post for some chili and some excellent Navajo fry bread. Pour a little honey on it and YUM!<\/p>\n<p>The Navajo Bridge crosses the Colorado River. The original bridge was built in the 1920&#8217;s and still serves as a pedestrian bridge (on the left). This is a slot canyon, wide in some places, very narrow in others. There are multiple slot canyons you can tour. This one had no long Jeep rides, no hiking through 2 foot deep water, but there were a few steep staircases. We went with Dixie Ellis Tours and our guide was very good. We spent over an hour in the canyon. It was the highlight of the trip.<\/p>\n<p>We took a lot of pictures. We stopped at most of the view points in the park. It&#8217;s a fairly easy hike but does have a big elevation change. This was a very nice hike.<\/p>\n<p>On our drive back to Las Vegas, we cut through Zion National Park. We did not stop to hike, we only took a few pictures from the road.<\/p>\n<p>In Las Vegas, we stayed off the strip, at a Hampton Inn in the suburb of Henderson. Dinner was at the Sunset Station Casino for the &#8216;Feast&#8217; buffet. This casino was next to our hotel. After seeing the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon and Bryce Canyon, this was a bit of a let down.
