In February and March, we took a two month trip to Guanajuato city in Mexico.\u00a0 This wasn’t a vacation.\u00a0 It was an experiment to see what it would be like to live in another country.\u00a0 The plan was to live like locals as much as possible (without knowing much Spanish).\u00a0 We rented an apartment through Airbnb. We bought fruit and vegetables at the local market next door. We bought hot and fresh tortillas from the tortilleria across the street.\u00a0 We shopped at the local supermarkets for most things.\u00a0 We cooked at home 3 or 4 times a week.\u00a0 We did laundry.\u00a0 We read books, watched hockey, walked around the city; normal everyday things.<\/p>\n
In 2018 we went to Mexico for 2 weeks.\u00a0 When we were in San Miguel de Allende, we took a day trip to the city of Guanajuato.\u00a0 We only spent about 4 hours in Guanajuato, but immediately knew we wanted to spend more time there.\u00a0 Guanajuato is high in the central mountains and has fairly consistent temperatures year round, warm days and cool nights.\u00a0 It seemed like a good place to stay for two months, two winter months in the U.S.<\/p>\n

\nThe Apartment<\/strong><\/p>\n
The blog doesn’t have any pictures of the apartment.\u00a0 I didn’t take too many, so a couple of these are screen captures of the Airbnb page.\u00a0 If you have read the blog, then you know that this apartment is no longer available for rent, so I can’t provide a link to it on Airbnb.<\/p>\n

\nGuanajuato<\/strong><\/p>\n
This is the place where we’d buy rotisserie chicken.\u00a0 It’s not a restaurant.\u00a0 It’s just a brick oven right inside the door.\u00a0 You might have to zoom in on the picture to see the flames in the doorway just to the left of the light pole.\u00a0 For 95 pesos (around US$5) you get a whole chicken, some potatoes and a salad.\u00a0 We went there a bunch of times.<\/p>\n

The Alh\u00f3ndiga de Granaditas is now a museum, but was an important location during the Mexican War of Independence in 1810.<\/p>\n

One day we were walking north of the Centro and ran into a castle.\u00a0 This is a hotel, I think built in the 1950’s, but the land was something all the way back into the 1600’s.<\/p>\n

At the Callejon del Beso (Alley of the kiss).\u00a0 The buildings are very close and the alley very narrow.<\/p>\n

Sometimes wandering up the alleyways gets you nothing but exercise.\u00a0 Some are dead ends, so you have just climbed a lot of stairs only to have to turn around and head back down.<\/p>\n
