We had some airline miles that were about to expire, not enough to go somewhere far (not even to Chicago) but enough to go to Los Angeles and visit our niece Carrie.<\/p>\n
After landing at LAX, we drove to the Santa Monica Pier.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>When we were last in LA in 2005, we stumbled upon a Cuban restaurant called Versailles.\u00a0 We tried it again and it was just as good as we remembered; Fried pork chunks in a citrus\/garlic sauce.<\/p>\n
On the next day we saw the space shuttle Endeavour at the California Science Center.\u00a0 You may have seen a TV commercial for the Toyota Tundra pulling this space shuttle through the streets of LA.\u00a0 Eventually they are going to mount this to one of the fuel tanks and display it vertically.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Lunch was at the Langer’s Deli for pastrami sandwiches, we weren’t impressed.\u00a0 Dinner was at Izakaya Takasei where anything grilled on a stick was great (grilled asparagus with bacon anyone?)<\/p>\n
Day 3 takes us to the the Bowers Museum and the Nixon library (he was from nearby Yorba Linda).\u00a0 Neither were exceptional, just standard museums.\u00a0 Lunch was at Bruxie for waffle\/chicken sandwiches (very good) and dinner was at Adalberto’s for tacos and burritos (very large and good).<\/p>\n

\nDay 4 takes us to the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Museum.\u00a0 Lunch was at Raffi’s Place where we had large and tasty platters of kabobs. Lunch was so filling that dinner was ice cream at Afters.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Hollywood Museum had many items from the Back to the Future movie series.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Hannibal Lecter’s cell from Silence of the Lambs.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>Jeannie’s bottle, Dorothy’s ruby slippers and more.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Day 5 was a quiet day sitting around Carrie’s place.\u00a0 We had Portillo’s for lunch and some pastries from Porto’s Bakery.
\n
\nDay 6 we took a two hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park.\u00a0 We found out that Joshua Trees aren’t trees, they are yucca plants.\u00a0 The rock formations are pretty cool too.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>In the park was a view point of the San Andreas Fault. I think it’s the low ridge in the middle of this valley.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>Dinner was at In-N-Out.\u00a0 Quite frankly we don’t get the passion that some people have for this place.\u00a0 They just opened one up in our home town and the lines are crazy long.\u00a0 The burgers were good enough, but the fries tasted like paper.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
Day 7 we drove to Huntington Beach to walk and watch some surfers.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Lunch was at Wahoo’s for fish tacos.\u00a0 We had an afternoon snack at Rita’s where Denise had a Gelati (layers of Italian ice and frozen custard).\u00a0 She had green apple Italian ice with vanilla custard topped with caramel.\u00a0 It was yummy.\u00a0 I had chocolate frozen custard of course.<\/p>\n
