Park<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Bosque de Chapultepec is a very nice park (and very large). We had been to this park in 2019 when we visited Mexico City for a few days from our 2 months in Guanajuato. At home, we regularly walk in the park near our house, and we wanted to keep up the routine. The apartment we chose was located one block from the entrance to the Bosque de Chapultepec. The apartment was also 4 or 5 blocks to two different metro lines for easy access anywhere in the city (a ride on the metro still costs only 5 pesos, about 25 cents)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here is the apartment, which was on a one-way, tree lined, relatively quiet street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here are some park pictures<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the botanical garden, not much was blooming at this time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For some reason, there are mosquito statues<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another reason we chose to visit Mexico City was because their zoo has a panda. When we were in Mexico City in 2019, we were walking around the park waiting for a museum to open. We walked past the zoo and decided not to go in because we figured, seen one zoo seen them all. Well it turns out we had been wanting to see a panda in person, but we didn’t know that Mexico City had a panda. And the bigger kick in the head was that the zoo is free to enter! <\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the zoo is in the Bosque de Chapultepec, where we were walking almost everyday, we went to the zoo probably 10-15 times. We ended up with about 100 pictures of the panda and about 3 pictures of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s a very nice zoo. One of the nicest we’ve been to in all our travels. Lots of animals, in a park like setting. More pictures of the zoo on the next page, but for now: PANDA!<\/p>\n\n\n\n As I mentioned, this is a very nice zoo. And it’s free (the butterfly and reptile houses cost money, and they are worth doing once). Every day or two, we’d wander in and look at the panda. We went through the whole zoo a couple times too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Multiple kinds of animals in one enclosure. Hopefully there are no carnivores!<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Go ahead, pet my stomach<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we went to the anthropology museum in 2019, I missed taking a picture of the the Aztec sun stone with a human for scale. BTW, in our month in Mexico City, about half the people wore masks outdoors and 80-90% wore masks indoors. This museum required masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the historic centro, there is a ruin of a temple from when this city was called Tenochtitlan. There isn’t much to see outside, but by looking at the foundations you could definitely see the layers of building, one temple on top of the other. I think there were 7 temples built on top of each other. The museum has many artifacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pretty flowers in the museum courtyard<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, construction began in the late 1500s<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mmmm, food<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cochinita tacos from La Loca Hambre (The Crazy Hunger). They were very filling and cheap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we travel, we are always sucked in to anyplace that claims to have Chicago style Italian Beef sandwiches. And they always fail to taste remotely like a real beef sandwich. (unless it is Portillo’s in LA or Phoenix). In Mexico City, there is Chicago Bernie’s which does a reasonable job of recreating the beef sandwich. Not perfect, but pretty good. (I forgot to order giardiniera the first time we went)<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was a panaderia near the apartment that had gigantic donuts for 17 pesos each (~90 cents).
