We took this vacation to relax. There was no real plan other than to stay in two cities, Ajijic (on Lake Chapala) and San Miguel de Allende. Both are in the central highlands: Ajijic at over 5000 ft in elevation and San Miguel over 6500 ft. We flew into Guadalajara because Ajijic is only about 30 minutes from the airport. We used Uber quite a bit to get around as it allowed us to avoid trying to describe in Spanish where we wanted to go (although some Uber drivers spoke fine English). We took a long distance bus (very plush buses, took about 5 1\/2 hours) to get to San Miguel and back. From Ajijic we took a day trip to Guadalajara, and from San Miguel we took a day trip to Guanajuato.<\/p>\n
Ajijic is one of many towns\/villages along Lake Chapala, the largest lake in Mexico. It has a very small town feel, with a great malec\u00f3n, a walkway and park long the lake. It seems very family friendly, where even the teenagers hung out with their parents.<\/p>\n
San Miguel de Allende is an old historic city from the 1500’s. It was an important city during the silver mining days when Spain ruled Mexico. It’s more upscale than Ajijic, meaning more touristy and more expensive, but still had plenty of Mexican ‘feel’ (I really don’t want to use the word ‘charm’).<\/p>\n

The cobblestone streets were hard to walk on in some places as they had more rounded stones instead of flat stones.\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
Not sure what was going on here. There was a very small parade with some kids sitting on a car hood followed by a band.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

One of the hotel courtyards and the view from breakfast every morning. This hotel included breakfast, and it was very good, with a great view. Denise liked the French toast and I enjoyed the frittata.\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
The malec\u00f3n was a great place to walk. Most nights we would go there and walk from one end to the other. People were always here at night. On Saturday there was some family event going on. We saw them setup in the morning, bringing in many coolers with food and drink. At night there were balloons and a 10 piece band, with tons of kids playing and parents relaxing.\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Guadalajara<\/h5>\n
When we flew into Guadalajara (second largest city in Mexico), we didn’t see much because the airport is to the south of the city, in between Guadalajara and Ajijic. One day we took an Uber to a mall in Guadalajara, mostly to get a Blizzard from Dairy Queen, but also to see a little of the city as we drove through. (We had trouble finding good ice cream in Ajijic).<\/p>\n
All malls look the same no matter where you are in the world.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
Walked into a Sanborns department store, and what did I see, front and center, a Cheap Trick record on vinyl. (Ignore the record above and behind it)\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

San Miguel de Allende<\/h5>\n

San Miguel didn’t have a Dairy Queen, but it did have churros. Here we have some churros that were filled with Nutella, by slicing the churros the long way and squirting it in.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I’m under the impression that a lot of people come here to get married or for their honeymoon. We saw a couple of Mojiganga parades, with a large papier-mache bride and groom.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
We tried an elote snack, corn in a cup with butter, mayonnaise, chili powder and lime juice. It was ok, but not as good as ice cream.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Guanajuato<\/h5>\n
From San Miguel we took a day trip to Guanajuato. Guanajuato is a really pretty city. It was also founded in the 1500’s and is where a lot of silver was mined when Spain ran the show. Some of the streets run through tunnels underground, and some of the streets aren’t streets at all, but are just stairs.<\/p>\n

We took the funicular to the top for a view and walked down.\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

They built a train station but never the rails, so this is now a market.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
More churros. These were filled with liquid chocolate by squirting it down the center (it all ended up at the bottom, so you needed to tilt it a little while eating).\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
Lunch was at Tortas mi Lugar. Can’t believe how cheap this was, and still was good. We each had pork milanesa (breaded, fried, thin pork). It came on a large plate with rice, beans and a salad, and tortillas on the side. Each plate was 50 pesos, a little over $2.50. We were full for the day.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
