Since there are no non-stop flights from Seattle to Barcelona, we flew in to London and spent a couple of nights there before flying to Barcelona. After visiting with Chrissy for a few days, we went to Madrid, Gibraltar, Málaga, Granada, Córdoba, Lisbon, then back to Barcelona. After which we flew back to London for a couple more nights before the long flight home.

Again, we packed light. We each had our backpacks filled with the bare minimum. I think we took even less than last time. Last time we went in March, so we needed extra cold weather gear which was not needed this time. Also, four years later, the electronics are smaller and lighter. And we did laundry more often, which wasn’t a problem.

The weather was pretty good in Spain, maybe a little too warm and too sunny. Spain has a large yellow ball in the sky that we don’t have in Seattle. It seemed hot only a few days, but mostly it was pleasant. We experienced a little light rain at times in Lisbon and London. Heavy rain one night in Barcelona and one day in Lisbon.

Day 1 - Oct 17-18, 2017
Last updated: 11/24/17 3:00pm PT

The flight to London from Seattle is 9+ hours, and left on Oct 17th and arrived Oct 18th. We sprung for the lay-down seats on the way to London and just the wider/roomier seats on the way home. It’s still hard to sleep on a plane, even if you are laying down. And those lay-down seats weren’t designed for people over 6 feet tall, but they were still pretty nice.

On arrival in London, we went to the hotel and took showers. Then we went straight to Masters Superfish for dinner. It was awesome as usual. See web pages from 2009 and 2013 for pictures. We forced ourselves to stay awake to help avoid the jet lag (which was ultimately unavoidable).

We stayed north of Hyde Park and Kensington Palace. Our hotel building was so old, the floors were slanted. This didn’t seem like a problem until you got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Walking on a slanted floor in the dark when you are drowsy causes you to walk on an angle to the right, forcing you to bounce into the wall.

Day 2 - Oct 19, 2017
Last updated: 11/24/17 4:00pm PT

Yesterday I got a UK SIM card for my phone. Chrissy came in to Barcelona this morning to show us some of her favorite places. We walked La Rambla, the main tourist street. We stopped in some little place for churros y chocolate. The Catalan region of Spain has been trying to become an independent nation. They even declared independence, but no other country recognized them, so that failed. Today the Spanish government declared direct rule over the previously autonomous region, so there was an evening protest.

First rule of travel, if you see a crowd of protesters gathering, walk the other way. We didn’t do that (at first). We walked into the crowd. Since the protest was just beginning, we thought we’d be able to get through to see the houses. The crowd grew quickly, and although it was peaceful, we didn’t want to be stuck in the middle of their independence movement. So we ducked down into the subway and left. The TV news that night said 450,000 people gathered, although it wasn’t that crowded when we were there.

Dinner was at La Fonda Paisa for some very good Colombian food. We took the high speed train from Madrid to Málaga, then a bus to Gibraltar. The train took about 2.5 hours and the bus took about 3 hours. The train arrived at 10:50 and we were trying to catch the 11:30 bus. Luckily the train station and bus station are across the street from each other. Since Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory, the Spanish bus company won’t take you into Gibraltar, as Spain would really like to have it back (Gibraltar is a small piece of land sticking out of the south coast of Spain). The bus dropped us off in La Línea de la Concepción, the Spanish town neighboring Gibraltar to the north. From there you walk across the border, and either take the Gibraltar city bus or walk the rest of the way.

We took the city bus. However, from the bus the streets seemed crazy, we had no idea where we were, and my phone wasn’t getting a signal. At some point we just got off and walked to our hotel (it wasn’t very far, so we got lucky). The hotel was old and undergoing a major remodel, and we had one of the old rooms. Our first night around 7pm, we noticed the water was shut off. It was off for quite a few hours. The hotel manager moved us in to one of their newly remodeled rooms, which was very nice, and also good because the AC in the old room wasn’t keeping up with the heat of the day.

The Rock of Gibraltar as seen from Spain.

Gibraltar, from Grand Casemates Square.

Palm trees next to the iconic British phone booth.

Dinner was at Roy’s for fish and chips. From this point you can look out over the Mediterranean and see Africa.

Crossing the Strait of Gibraltar into Tangier, Morocco was originally on our list of things to do. When we plan a trip, we make a list of almost everything that could possibly be done. From there, we devise a path to travel. Then we slowly whittle down the list by dropping things that are either too far or repeats of similar things we’ve already seen. Tangier was the last thing we dropped from our list. It seemed like we would only be going there to check some imaginary checkbox that says we set foot on Africa. Since we wouldn’t be going deep into Morocco, and we’d only be in the tourist area of Tangier, we wouldn’t be getting any kind of real cultural experience. Going to Morocco would have added at least 2 more days onto our trip, which was already going to be over 3 weeks long. And since there are almost 200 countries on planet Earth, and there is no way we’re ever going to get to more than 10% of them, the checkbox idea is not a good reason to go. Had The Rock of Gibraltar been on the African side, then yeah, we might have gone.

It was hazy, but you could see Africa.

Gibraltar is kind of odd. I was unable to check-in for the flight online, kept getting an error message, so I called the airline (TAP Air Portugal) to make sure everything was ok. They said everything was ok, but I’d have to check-in at the airport. So we left early to give ourselves extra time if there were problems at the airport. There were problems. Not sure what happened, but it took the person behind the counter quite a while and also a long phone call to get us our boarding passes. I’m sure the people in line behind us were very upset at how long it took. In the end, everything worked out. This was the first time I was on a propeller plane.

We stayed at the My Story Ouro Hotel in Lisbon. The room was very nice, small but renovated. Walked around Lisbon in the afternoon. We asked the front desk where a grocery store was, and the directions they gave said walk two blocks that way, go in the building and take the elevator up, then walk a couple more blocks. That sounded a bit confusing, but off we went. In some nondescript building there is a public elevator, no sign out front, or at least none that I saw. It looks just like any other building on the street. Yet, there was an elevator to take you up 3 floors where you exited out the opposite side of the elevator on to the next street. Yes, the hills are that steep.

For dinner we had burgers at B Temple. It was a pile of food. The burger was in there somewhere. We walked a few blocks off the beaten path and found this gem, (with the help of TripAdvisor). The appetizer we had was called molten creamy cheese, a melted wheel of cheese and bread for dipping (like fondue, awesome). For dinner we had Iberian parrilhada, a giant plate with various cuts of grilled black pig. It came with fries and salad. Now that was a meal. I’d call it an art museum, because these tiles were very artistic, painted tiles instead of painted canvas.

We also went to the Lisbon Oceanarium. It was pouring rain when we rode the bus there. The ticket line was under cover of a roof, so we stood there and bought our tickets. We realized we should eat lunch first, their cafeteria line was moving slowly, and it probably wasn’t good food anyway. So we left the Oceanarium (the rain had stopped at this point) and we found an all you can eat Brazilian buffet called Chimarrão. This is a restaurant where the waiters walk around to your table, each waiter holding a skewer with a large hunk of meat (of various cuts). They put the tip of the skewer on your plate and carve off slices of grilled meat at your table. It was very good.
