Appian Way

The Appian Way is THE road from ancient Rome. They started building it in the 4th century BC. Make sure you know your bus routes before coming here. We almost started a long walk before we realized we needed to turn around. But we got to see some sheep.

One minute we are walking along the road, the next all of these sheep start jumping over the wall into the road.

Ostia Antica

Went to Ostia Antica this morning.  It is a suburban distance from Rome, and possibly the first colony of ancient Rome. At one time this was a port town, but the coastline has moved about 3km out. The site is very much like Pompeii, but less crowded and was not buried by volcanic ash, but mud from a shifting river.  The town was abandoned and was buried slowly over time.
