Road Trip! We have been wanting to go to Mt. Rushmore for a while, and in May our nephew John was graduating from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. We thought we would drive to Colorado and see a few things along the way. Round trip, we drove 3800 miles. We drove through 9 different states (Oregon twice, Idaho twice, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming twice, Montana, Washington). We used our little Ford Fiesta and got great gas mileage. Total for the entire trip was 41 mpg. The best we got was 48.6 and the worst was 35. Mileage was worse when driving on the rural interstates in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana where the legal speed limit is 80 mph. We did better doing 65 through the mountains than 80 on flat ground.
