We got up at 4:30am one day so we could hike to the top of Diamond Head. It was very warm in Honolulu during the day, mid to upper 80’s, and the overnight lows were only in the low to mid 70s. So we wanted to get an early start. The volcanic tuff cone (yeah, it’s a volcano, dormant for 150,000 years) is open for hiking beginning at 6am. We took the bus to get there, and arrived shortly before 6:00. The hike is fairly steep, and the worst part is near the end, when you have to climb a lot of stairs.

The first picture is taken from the start of the trail, with the moon overhead.

Stairs, lots of stairs.

On the wall in a tunnel (below a rusty pipe clamp) we saw some wildlife. Not sure if this is a gecko or some other lizard.

If you look close enough you can see the sweat pouring down my face.
