Today we visited Wupatki and Walnut Canyon National Monuments.
Wupatki was occupied until around the 1200’s. This site’s ruins are a large dwelling, a community room and a ball court.
This was called a ‘blow hole’. Felt like air conditioning. This is where I would have built my house.
There are a bunch of volcanoes north of Flagstaff. Here is Sunset Crater and its broken up lava field.
Walnut canyon has multiple cliff dwellings. Nature carved out the cliff overhangs and people built walls to make rooms for living and storage. Walnut canyon was pretty cool. Not Mesa Verde cool, but still a nice site. There were a lot of stairs to get down to the cliff dwellings, and it seemed like double the amount of stairs on the way back up.
There are rooms visible on many levels.
