Europe 2017

Day 15 - Nov 1, 2017

Took a tram to Belém, a neighborhood in Lisbon, so we could see a couple of sights and have their famous pastel de nata, an egg tart pastry. They were ok.

Things we saw today: The Monument of the Discoveries, The Belém Tower, and St. George’s Castle.

Monument of the Discoveries, built in 1940.

Belém Tower was built in the 16th century.

The streets of Lisbon.

Near our hotel was this steam-punk elevator, the Santa Justa Lift built in 1902.

Dinner was at Velha Gaiteira. Near our hotel were a bunch of restaurants, and you couldn’t walk past them without someone trying to stick a menu in your face, and they all looked the same (and not very good). We walked a few blocks off the beaten path and found this gem, (with the help of TripAdvisor). The appetizer we had was called molten creamy cheese, a melted wheel of cheese and bread for dipping (like fondue, awesome). For dinner we had Iberian parrilhada, a giant plate with various cuts of grilled black pig. It came with fries and salad. Now that was a meal. Denise’s favorite.
