Day 11 - Sep 9, 2014 Last updated: 9/21/14 5:00pm PT
We spent the night in Ellsworth, ME, near Acadia National Park. In the morning we drove to Portland, ME. We didn’t have anything planned for Portland, other than eating lunch, but we drove downtown and saw the Portland Observatory (a maritime signal tower built in 1807 which looks like a lighthouse) and the Eastern Promenade (a nice park along the water).
Next stop was the John Paul Jones House in Portsmouth, NH. I assumed by the name that this was his house, but it was a boarding house where he stayed only twice. The house is now a Portsmouth history museum and had a lot of interesting information. A large exhibit was on the Treaty of Portsmouth from 1905 to end the Russo-Japanese war, and that was very interesting. There was also information about John Paul Jones, and basically he was a pirate.
We spent the night in Durham, NH, just outside of Portsmouth.
