New England 2014

Day 13 - Sep 11, 2014
Last updated: 9/21/14 5:00pm PT

We drove into Connecticut this morning to visit the Gillette Castle. The drive to East Haddam was nice, on winding tree-lined roads. The leaves are still not changing.

The Gillette Castle was built in 1914 by actor William Gillette (famous for playing Sherlock Holmes). This was a very interesting site.

Gillette designed the house, and each door is different, with unique locks and knobs.

He also built a small scale train to give visitors a ride around his land. Except for this tiny section, the train tracks have been removed.

The next stop was in Rocky Hill, CT at the Dinosaur State Park. During the ’60s while excavating for a new state building, a large area of fossilized dinosaur tracks were uncovered. So they built a museum around the tracks. These tracks are over 200 million years old.

The last stop of this vacation is Boston, where we started almost 2 weeks ago. We dropped off the car at the airport rental location and walked to the Embassy Suites, where we stayed for free (We finally had accumulated enough hotel reward points to get a free hotel stay – and hotel prices in Boston are really high, so spending points in Boston was an optimal way to use them). We stayed near the airport because we have a very early flight home tomorrow morning.

We took the subway into downtown Boston and randomly stepped into a bar that served boiled lobster. Turns out we randomly walked into Hennessy’s, which is where we had lobster in 2001.

I wore a bib too.
