Savannah, GA
Savannah was more like a layover in between stops. We wandered the downtown historic district and along the waterfront, but with no specific destination. We ate dinner at a place called Wiley’s Championship BBQ (enjoyed the fried pickles and the BBQ). On our way into Savannah, we bought a bag of ‘boiled peanuts’ from a roadside stand. My dentist said that I must try boiled peanuts sold at roadside stands along the coast in SC. Well, I’m not sure if he was joking or not, but they were horrible. Soggy, mushy and tasted like dirty bath water. Maybe we got a bad batch, but we tossed them after trying only one each.
Andersonville, GA
Andersonville is the site of a horrific prisoner of war camp from the Civil War. There is a museum on site that talks about all kinds of POWs from many wars. This camp was packed with over 45,000 men who struggled to survive. 13,000 died in 14 months.
It’s hard to picture. There was one corner wall that was reconstructed, and white polls erected to show where the walls once stood.
And of course, a lot of grave markers.
