We visited the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, AL. It tells the story of the civil rights movement from the 50’s and 60’s. The history is told in a time-line of events, not only related to the civil rights movement, but other things that were happening in the world at that time. I did not take any pictures here.

We drove around the Vicksburg National Military Park, where a Civil War battle and siege took place in 1863. The park contains many monuments to the troops that served here. There are signs indicating where the Union and Confederate troops were positioned. In some places it is hard to imagine what it was like, as there are cannons pointed into forests of trees that certainly weren’t there 150 years ago.
There is also the USS Cairo on display. This was an iron clad ship that was sunk during the Civil War and remained in the river until the 1960s. Large portions have obviously been rebuilt for the display.
