Today we took a train to Pisa. Pisa is about one hour from Florence. There’s a church, baptistery and cemetery next to the tower, but you don’t want to see those. It was very windy.
After Pisa, we took the train to the walled town of Lucca. Lucca is Europe’s leading producer of toilet paper and tissue, but that’s not why we went there. There’s been a wall around Lucca for 2000 years. The current wall is from the 16th century, completely encircles the old town and is a city park. There were lots of bikers and joggers passing us as we walked around the entire 2.5 mile wall.
The other interesting thing to see here is the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. An old Roman amphitheater was cannibalized and all that remains is the shape. Most piazzas are square or rectangular in shape. This piazza is an oval.
