Day 17 - Mar 21, 2013 Last updated: 4/7/13 3:00pm PT
This morning we walked to St. Mark’s Square and Basilica.
Notice the stacked risers in the middle of the picture? Those are used when the square floods so the tourists don’t get their feet (or ankles or knees) wet.
We also went to the Doge’s Palace. The Doge was the big cheese of Venice from about 700 to 1797. Now the Doge’s residence is a museum. Again, we were not supposed to take pictures. (Oops)
These two pictures are external and internal shots of the Bridge of Sighs, the last view of Venice a prisoner would see on their way to a prison cell.
In the afternoon we wandered around Venice. All of the areas we’d seen so far had been crooked walkways between buildings. We found an area in the southeast section of Venice that actually had straight wide streets and trees. We did not expect to see this. We also sat on a park bench for a little while. It was a sunny day. Most days on this trip had seen some rain and were chilly.
Dinner was at Pizzeria Vesuvio. Best pizza on this trip in Italy. Denise thought she was ordering a pizza with four different toppings. That’s exactly what she got, just not all mixed together as expected.
After dinner we took the vaporetto back to our hotel. The water-bus looks like a road-bus on the inside.
